9 Health Hacks to Celebrate Men's Health Month

June is Men’s Health Month and it is a perfect time for you to take the steps you need to live a healthy life!

This event is the perfect time to raise awareness to the preventable health problems that many men face. It is also serves as a great opportunity to encourage early detection and treatment of diseases. Our personal health should always be top priority, but often times it takes a backseat when it comes to other issues in our lives.

If you are a man, now is the time to speak with your doctor about getting screened for both prostate cancer and colorectal cancer. Screenings can find cancer early when treatment is most likely to be more effective. According to the CDC, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, affecting 1 in every 11 men. If you are a man over age 50, are African American, or have a father/brother/son who has had prostate cancer, you are at the greatest risk.

Medicare covers a digital rectal exam and a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test once every 12 months. Medicare also covers a variety of colorectal cancer screenings such as fecal occult blood tests, flexible sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy, and you pay nothing for most tests. If everyone  aged 50-75 got screened regularly, as much as 60% of deaths from these types of cancers could be avoided.

There are other important preventative services you have access to if you are on Medicare, such as:

  1. Blood pressure readings
  2. Cholesterol tests
  3. Alcohol misuse screenings and counseling
  4. Cardiovascular testing
  5. Depression screenings
  6. Diabetes screenings
  7. Glaucoma testing
  8. Flu and pneumonia shots
  9. Routine vaccinations such as flu shots, Hepatitis shots and Pneumococcal shots

Healthier men live longer, healthier lives. Do something for your body and health this month and make prevention and early detection a priority! Call and speak with our team of experts to find out which tests are covered for you.
