An active shooter situation, a scenario that is quickly becoming our worst nightmare. With two active shooting events happening on the same day just this week it is raising awareness that incidents like this are becoming more commonplace. There has been little to no warning before many of these events have occurred, and a majority of victims are just simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security defines an active shooter as “an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to the selection of their victims.” Active shooter incidents are often unpredictable and can progress quickly.
While we may not ever expect to be caught in an active shooter situation, the rapidly growing number of these attacks through the years continues to show that anyone can be a victim at anytime. In addition to learning ways we can attempt to keep ourselves safe if we were to ever be faced with an active shooter situation, we must also be conscious to what it could mean to our loved ones if we were to ever become a victim to an awful tragedy such as this.
